1. When Should I consider using a Sun-Mar?
- When there is no plumbing. A Sun-Mar provides an instant low cost toilet.
- When there is an outhouse. A Sun-Mar offers a much appreciated upgrade.
- When toilet waste needs to be removed from an overloaded septic system.
- When there is a water shortage. A Sun-Mar substantially reduces your water needs.
- Whenever minimizing the environmental impact, a Sun-Mar is the answer.
2. Where can a Sun-Mar composting toilet be used?
- A summer cottage, cabin, or campground.
- A pool house, cabana, boat house, or garden shed.
- Horse barns or any other barn or outbuilding.
- Remote offices, classrooms, dormitories, workshops, gate houses, or security posts.
- In any residence, especially where it is important to make the minimum ecological footprint.
- Boats, RV’s, Vans, or anything else that moves.
3. Is a Sun-Mar composting toilet odorless?
Absolutely! In fact, customers find that there is less odor than with a traditional toilet. Hard to believe? The proof is in the National Sanitation Foundation’s certification. The NSF only certifies composting units that produce no odor at maximum capacity. This amazing feature is accomplished in two ways.
- Sun-Mar toilets are designed so that air is constantly being drawn in and up the vent stack to create a partial vacuum. On electric units, air is drawn in by a fan and exhausted to a 2’’ vent stack, and on non-electric units by a 4’’ vent stack that acts just like a chimney on a wood stove.
- The patented Bio-Drum ensures a non-offensive odor aerobic breakdown of wastes.
4. Is the Sun-Mar designs certified for use everywhere?
While standards are constantly changing, Sun-Mar makes every effort to monitor and comply with usage and design standards around the world. Currently, Sun-Mar composting toilets hold the following certifications.
- Certified to meet Australian Standards.
- Certified to comply with applicable European Product Safety Standards and satisfies the provision for CE marking.
- Electrical features are CSA approved: LR 55925-2
- SEMKO Certified: Sweden for 220 Volt units.
- Mobile units are certified by the United States Coast Guard.
- NSF-Sun-Mar is the only composting toilet certified by the National Sanitation Foundation for use in North America.
5. Can Sun-Mar composting toilets be used in the winter?
Yes. For limited use the unit acts as a holding tank as long as there is sufficient room in the Bio-drum. For extended winter use, the unit must be kept warm in order for composting to continue. This can be accomplished by taking appropriate steps to insulate and supply heat to the area with a space heater or other heat source.
6. Are Sun-Mar units easy to operate?
Yes. Start-up is as simple as adding some peat mix bulking material called “Compost Sure” to the Bio-drum, and some special microbes called “Sun-Mar Microbe Mix.” Enough of each product is supplied with each unit to get started. Once you add both, you are ready to use your Sun-Mar just like a regular toilet, even using regular toilet paper. To keep it going, just add one cupful of Peat Mix per person per day and rotate the drum using the recessed handle 4-6 complete revolutions every 2-3 days. For weekend use, just rotate the drum before you leave at the end of the weekend. Removing the compost is quick and easy and is only required once or twice a year in most applications. Best of all, you never have to come in contact with any fresh waste material.
